Songkhla Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Songkhla per Thailand's far south, sitting almost on the Malaysian frontier, is the natural first stop for anyone rattling down the Malay Peninsula by road or touching down at Hat Yai International Airport, the region's busiest runway. Coastal breezes meet hard-nosed logistics here: most foreigners step off the plane amid Hat Yai's echoing arrivals hall, rubber stamps clacking while loudspeakers bounce announcements off polished floors. Maybe you've come for Songkhla's beaches, maybe for the timeworn Sino-Portuguese shophouses of Songkhla Old Town, maybe for the night market smoke that drifts over Samila Road, whatever the lure, knowing the entry drill keeps your first southern-Thai moments smooth instead of stressful. Queues move briskly. But patience helps when weekend convoys of Malaysian shoppers clog the counters.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Thailand's visa policy applies uniformly nationwide, including for Songkhla entry points.

Visa-Free Entry
30 days (air arrival) or 15 days (land/sea border crossing)

Citizens of numerous countries receive visa-free entry for tourism purposes when arriving by air, land, or sea.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Australia Canada Germany France Italy Spain Netherlands Belgium Switzerland Austria Sweden Norway Denmark Finland Japan South Korea Singapore Malaysia

Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond entry date. Proof of onward travel and sufficient funds (typically 10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family) may be requested. The 30-day visa-free period can be extended once for an additional 30 days at local immigration offices.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
30 days

Thailand introduced a new ETA system in 2024 for visa-free nationalities to pre-register entry.

Includes
All visa-free countries (implementation ongoing)
How to Apply: Apply online through the official Thai e-Visa portal approximately 24-72 hours before travel. Simple form requiring passport details, travel dates, and accommodation information.
Cost: Nominal processing fee

System rollout has been gradual. Check current requirements as implementation expands. Not yet mandatory for all nationalities as of late 2024.

Visa Required
60 days (single-entry tourist visa)

Citizens of countries not eligible for visa-free entry must obtain a visa before arrival.

How to Apply: Apply at Thai embassy or consulate in home country or country of residence. Requires passport photos, flight itinerary, proof of accommodation, bank statements, and visa fee payment.

Processing typically takes 3-5 business days. Some nationalities may apply for e-Visa through the official portal. Multiple-entry tourist visas valid for 6 months are available for frequent visitors.

Arrival Process

Arriving in Songkhla province typically means passing through Hat Yai International Airport, the Sadao land border checkpoint, or the smaller Padang Besar crossing.

1
Arrival and Document Preparation
Have your passport, completed arrival card (distributed on flights or available at land borders), and proof of onward travel ready. The humid air hits immediately upon disembarking at Hat Yai airport, carrying the faint scent of jet fuel and tropical vegetation.
2
Immigration Inspection
Proceed to the foreign passport counters. Officers examine documents, scan fingerprints, and photograph travelers. The process typically takes 2-5 minutes per person during normal periods.
3
Baggage Claim and Customs
Collect luggage and proceed through customs inspection. Green channel for nothing to declare, red channel for goods requiring declaration.
4
Exit to Ground Transportation
Hat Yai airport offers taxis, ride-hailing services, and buses to Songkhla city (approximately 30 kilometers). The Sadao border connects directly to Malaysian buses and private vehicles.

Documents to Have Ready

Tips for Smooth Entry

Dress respectfully for immigration, avoid beachwear or revealing clothing that may create negative impression
